Clarence Ray McDowell, 71, of St.Augustine FL. passed away, after a long illness, with his wife and children by his side, on Friday, January 20, 2017 at Northeast Florida Community Hospice, St. Augustine FL.
Born Sept. 23, 1945 in Marietta, Ga. to Clarence Eugene McDowell (Dean) and Gladys McDowell Dover (James) who have predeceased Ray.
At 19 he enlisted in the Navy for 6 years, and stationed in Lakehurst, NJ. He resided in N.J until he and his wife Paula moved to St. Augustine in 2002.
Ray was a class A mechanic in the Navy, stationed in the US and Europe, on submarines, and Aircarft carriers. He flew on rescue missions in Vietnam. He spent 6 months in Antartica on a special project, where he received medals for both services.
Ray worked for TRW Fastensers, Mountainside N.J. for 28 years as a Tool and Dye Design Supervisor, his name is on patent for a GM door panel fastener.
Ray loved to fish on his boat with his son and friends in Point Pleasant, weekends at the family beach house in Manahawkin and LBI N.J. He coached his son's softball league, and played on soft ball team with co-workers and friends. He was a weekly tailgater, a devout NY Giant's fan.
Ray is survived by his wife of 27 years Pauline Villanova McDowell, daughters' Stacey and Laurie, son-in-law Ken, son Peter, daughter-in-law Laura, grandchildren Jacquelyn, Christopher, Karley, and Arianna. Sisters and, brother-in-laws, cousins, his Villanova family of 32 years in N.J. Sister Dottie, brother-in -law Cary, nephew, niece, aunts uncles, cousins of Ga.
