Sylvia M. (Samila) Shive

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Sylvia M. Shive (Samila), 92, of Clark, NJ on November 15, 2023.

Born in Newark, NJ to the late Anthony and Julia Samila, she was a first generation American and very proud of her Ukrainian heritage. She grew up in Irvington, NJ in the house her father built, graduating from high school in 1949. Her first job at Bell Telephone allowed her to spread her wings. She loved working and enjoyed her vacation time with the “gang” at the Jersey shore. She was the beloved wife of the late Henry Shive Jr.; they raised their family in Irvington until 1978 when they moved to Clark. 

She was involved in PTAs, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and being the neighborhood mom. As her children grew, she volunteered at school libraries, worked at The Union County AV, played Bingo, and loved her trips to Atlantic City. She shared her favorite vacations to Hawaii and Alaska with Henry. They loved to entertain with parties, BBQ’s and card games with family and friends.

Sylvia was also predeceased by her brother John and her son Theodore. She is survived by her loving children Thomas Shive (Andrea), Lorraine Cuomo (James), Nancy Sullivan (Richard) and Carol Mirek (Sean). Cherished grandmother to James, Michael, Christina, Randy, Sean Jr. and Alexander, great-grandmother to Sophia, James and Baby C on her way.

She will truly be missed by her family, extended family Kathy and Randy, friends especially Barbara and Skip, and her numerous cats Felix, Frankie, Teddy and Amy.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Visitation on Sunday November 19, 2023 from 2-6 pm at Krowicki Gorny Memorial Home 211 Westfield Ave. Clark, NJ 07066. Friends and family will gather Monday November 20, 2023 at 9:15 am at the Funeral Home, followed by a Funeral Service at 10:00 am. Interment, Hollywood Memorial Park, Union, NJ.
