Mary Yafchak Obituary

Mrs. Mary Sandy Yafchak passed away Thursday March 29th, 2018 in Elizabeth, NJ.  She was 82 years old.

Born in Scranton, PA, to Michael and Lorinda (Leonori) Sandy, Mary’s family moved to New Jersey when she was a little girl.  The Sandy’s were “pioneers”, among the first families to settle in Winfield Park, and Mary was a part of the first class of communicants in St. John the Apostle Church.  Mary worked for several years at Bell Telephone in Elizabeth where she was promoted to supervisor before leaving to raise her family.  Later she worked in the Butter Cake Bakery in Linden, the Coachman Inn in Cranford, and for the ARC of Union County, where she assisted disabled youth.  Mrs. Yafchak was a devout Catholic and a long-time parishioner of St. John the Apostle Church in Clark.  An avid bingo player, she loved trips to Atlantic City, and baking custom birthday cakes for her loved ones, but more than anything she cherished time spent with her family.

Mrs. Yafchak was predeceased by her parents, and by her brother, Michael Sandy, and sister, Delores Hamill.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 63 years, Stephen Yafchak; by their loving children Roy Yafchak (Wendy) of Old Bridge, Laura Lyn Dehn (Fred) of Rahway, Gregory Yafchak (Maureen) of Winfield Park, and Diana Rocco (Matt) of Aberdeen; also survived by her Godson, Thomas Buresch (Laura Jean) of Brick, by her grandchildren Jennifer Patterson (Sam) of Colonia, Sean Rocco (Michelle) of Westfield, Kaitlin Rocco and Gregory Yafchak Jr. at home, and Ellen Sainato (Anthony) of Linden; and by her great-grandson Austin Patterson.

Private entombment was held in St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.  Please consider memorial contributions in Mrs. Yafchak’s name to your local Humane Society or animal shelter.
