Leon J. Gutmann, age 83, passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday August 29, 2023.
Mr. Gutmann was born in Manhattan, NY, to Arthur and Hilde Gutmann, and he later resided in Staten Island before moving to Scotch Plains in 1986. He worked as a controller and held various other titles for Topps Trading Card Co. of Manhattan. He was also a licensed CPA and a member of the AICPA and the NY State Society of CPAs.
Leon was a devoted husband and father, unconditionally loving and supporting his wife and daughters in every way imaginable. An incredibly proud grandfather, he could always be found attending the theater performances, sports games, and school events of his grandchildren. To his family and friends, he was the steady voice of reason, and the one who could always be counted on. He loved every part of life, accepted that it would not always be easy, and took everything in stride.
Leon had a genuine interest in learning about every person he encountered, and this facet of his personality allowed him to connect with so many different people throughout his life. Those who knew him, even if they only met him once or twice, remember him for his easy-going kindness.
He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 59 years, Rita (nee Schaferman); his two daughters, Cheryl Gutmann and Lisa Mercurio; his son-in-law, Michael Mercurio; his sister, Hedy Lewenstein; and his three grandchildren, Paris, Maximus, and Marcus Mercurio.
Funeral services are private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Krowicki Gorny Memorial Home 211 Westfield Ave. Clark, NJ 07066. Information regarding a future celebration of Leon Gutmann’s life is forthcoming.
