Helen P. Hassler (nee Rodak), age 92, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2023, at Brandywine at Reflections: Assisted Living Residence in Brick, NJ.
Born in Elizabeth, to John and Verna Rodak, Helen then moved with her parents to Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania where she resided for 18 years. Helen graduated from James M. Coughlin High School in Wilkes Barre, PA in 1948 then moved to Elizabeth, NJ. While working in her grandmother’s polish diner in Elizabeth, Helen met the love of her life, Earl Hassler. Earl and Helen married in 1950, had 5 children and lived in Elizabeth until moving to Clark in 1965. Helen resided in Clark for 50 years before moving to Brick in 2015.
During her years in Clark, Mrs. Hassler worked in the cafeteria kitchen at the Carl H. Kumpf Middle School in Clark for 6 years. Following her time there, Helen began working as a packer and operator for the Polychrome Film Corporation of Clark for over 20 years until her retirement. Helen was a longtime volunteer for the Deborah Heart and Lung Foundation in Browns Mills, NJ. Mrs. Hassler was also a longtime parishioner of St. Agnes R.C. Church, Clark, and a member of Rosary Altar Society.
Helen loved bowling at Clark Lanes Bowling Alley for about 40 years until it closed, then continued bowling at Linden Lanes. On any given day you could find Helen walking around the track at Arthur L. Johnson High School or around her neighborhood. Her favorite past times included walking; going to the Polish Center in Clark; being a Greeter and attending daily and Saturday mass at St. Agnes; volunteering at the election polls in Clark; making pierogies, golabkis (stuffed cabbage) and muffins; watching her beloved Yankees; spending time with her family; going to Wildwood and most of all, dancing. If the music was playing, Helen was dancing, especially the Polka.
She is survived by her four children; Ray (Iris), Richard, Cynthia Phillips (Robert deceased), and Mary Ann Coleman (Jim); one brother, John Rodak; one sister Louise Cookus; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Mrs. Hassler is predeceased by her beloved husband, the late Earl Hassler (1996); one son the late William; five siblings, the late, Mary Suchocki, Elizabeth Wierzbinski, Raymond Rodak, Patricia Stella, and Jean Frank.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the Visitation on Friday June 9, 2023, from 3-7 pm at the Krowicki Gorny Memorial Home 211 Westfield Ave. Clark, NJ 07066. A Funeral Ceremony will begin on Saturday June 10, 2023, at 8:30 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:45 am, at St. Agnes R.C. Church, Clark.
