George Allen, age 91, passed away on Thursday, December 16, 2021, at Sunrise Senior Living of Westfield.
Born to George and Helen Allen, he grew up in Newark and Irvington, where he lived before moving to his final residence in Clark 50 years ago. Mr. Allen honorably served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War, where he attained the rank of Corporal, and he continued to serve in the reserves until early 1960s. He attended Seton Hall University, where he earned his B.S. and MBA degrees. Upon graduation he filled managerial positions at various moving and storage companies, ultimately ending up as the general manager of Engel Van Lines until that company ceased operations. During this time he also established himself as a successful self-employed financial planner. He was affiliated with multiple financial companies as an independent broker/agent, and won many awards over his fifty-year career.
In 1989 the U.S. Army recruited Mr. Allen to serve once again, this time as a civilian employee. His work as a logistics planner for Military Traffic Management Command heavily involved him in the planning for Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, as well as logistics planning to support NATO. He was proud of this work, and remained with MTMC until he retired in 1995.
Mr. Allen was a member of the American Legion of Clark Post 327. He was an avid softball player for most of his life, and was active in multiple town, county, and state leagues over the years. He was best known as a pitcher, and played on at least 16 championship teams in a career that spanned five decades. He was competitive well into his 70’s, and enjoyed every minute of it.
He is survived by his son George, daughter-in-law Maile, and one grandson. He was predeceased in 2013 by Doris, his beloved wife of 46 years.
Private Funeral Services are being offered for Mr. Allen under the care and direction of the Krowicki Gorny Memorial Home 211 Westfield Ave. Clark, NJ 07066.
